[March 2026] Subject Line Swipe File
10 templates to boost your open rates
Every month, I analyze dozens of subject lines.
Today, I want to share with you my 10 favorites from March.
Now, for each subject line, I’ll also share:
The template behind it
An example of the template in action
And a quick breakdown of why it works
Let’s get into it.
Subject Line #1: The “New Way” Hook
From: Liam Ottley
Why it works:
This one grabs attention by teasing a new or exciting way to do something old. It creates curiosity by implying the old way is outdated - but doesn’t say why yet.
You have to open to find out.
Template:
The NEW way to [achieve outcome]
Example:
The NEW way to learn coding
Subject Line #2: The Counterintuitive Question
From: Zita (Viral Creator)
Why it works:
This creates curiosity by asking a counterintuitive question. Why would anyone be upset about 1M views? It doesn’t make sense - so you click to find out.
Template:
Would you [negative emotion] over [positive result]?
Example:
Would you panic if you went viral?
Subject Line #3: The Vulnerable Lesson
From: Russell Brunson
Why it works:
This one grabs attention with a vulnerable statement (”failed startup”). Then it creates curiosity by teasing a surprising insight - what are “invisible chains”?
The combination of failure + mystery is hard to resist.
Template:
What [negative event] revealed about [hidden system]
Example:
What a lost deal taught me about “trust gaps”
Subject Line #4: The Unlikely Success Story
From: Andrew Warner
Why it works:
This grabs attention with a specific money figure ($30k). Then it creates curiosity by teasing a surprising outcome - a kidmaking $30k? How?
Specificity + surprise = clicks.
Template:
[Unlikely person] [big outcome] from [unexpected way]
Example:
Grandma ran a marathon without any training?
Subject Line #5: The “Here’s Why” Pattern Interrupt
From: Darren Lee
Why it works:
This one grabs attention by speaking to a common pain point (qualified leads not buying). Then it creates curiosity by teasing the real reason - which you have to open to learn.
Template:
[Ideal situation]. [Unexpected action/outcome]. Here’s why.
Example:
You were posting. Nobody was reading. Here’s why.
Subject Line #6: The Habit-to-Transformation
From: Dickie Bush
Why it works:
This one grabs attention with a specific number (7). Then it creates curiosity by contrasting a small habit (writing every day) with a massive outcome (change your life).
Small input → big output = compelling promise.
Template:
[#] ways [action] will [lead to big outcome]
Example:
5 ways ChatGPT could 10x your productivity
Subject Line #7: The “Right Now” Insider Access
From: Dave Gerhardt
Why it works:
This one creates curiosity by promising inside access to what a specific group is thinking. Adding “right now” makes it timely - which makes it feel more relevant and urgent.
Template:
How [specific group] feel about [trending topic] right now
Example:
How creators feel about the LinkedIn algorithm right now
Subject Line #8: The Success-to-Failure Flip
From: Freddie Chatt
Why it works:
This grabs attention with a big number (a million visitors). Then it flips success into failure - wait, nothing to show for it? How is that possible?
The flip creates a knowledge gap you have to close.
Template:
[Big surface level result] and nothing to show for it
Example:
Post got 5k+ likes and no leads to show for it
Subject Line #9: The Plug-and-Play Promise
From: Nicolas Cole
Why it works:
This one grabs attention by teasing a plug-and-play solution (copy-paste). Then it creates curiosity by tying a desirable result to a very specific timeframe (5 minutes).
Low effort + fast result = 💰💰💰
Template:
Copy-paste this [asset] to [achieve result] in [time]
Example:
Copy-paste my system to book 20 calls in 24 hours
Subject Line #10: The “Bad Way” Confession
From: Sam Vander Wielen
Why it works:
Last but not least, this one creates curiosity by teasing a negative or counterproductive way to get a desired result. Why would they admit to doing it the bad way? What happened?
Template:
The [bad/wrong] way I got [positive niche result]
Example:
The bad way I grew to 5k followers
And that’s it!
